Statement on Maui Wildfires

All of us at AURA and NSF’s National Solar Observatory (NSO), like many people in the world, are heartbroken by the tragedy which continues to impact our community on Maui—and especially the devastation in Lāhainā. We remain in solidarity with those impacted by this tragedy.

In the aftermath of this disaster, AURA’s and NSO’s first priority remains the safety and wellbeing of our staff and their families. At this time, out of an abundance of caution, the Daniel K. Inouye Telescope at Haleakalā Observatory is still closed for observations, as we monitor both the still active fires and new storms that could be headed our way; a team evaluated the telescope last week, and saw no major impact. Our offices in Makawao are open as of Tuesday, August 15.

In the wake of the wildfires, we need to pull together and help take care of a community that has given us so much and is now in the process of rebuilding. For those in need of help or those seeking to help–whether on Maui or elsewhere—Maui Rapid Response is a trusted entity dedicated to supporting Maui County citizen groups in crisis. Additionally, for those looking to contribute monetarily, Maui Rapid Response recommends the following as verified: Maui Mutual Aid; Hawai‘i Community Foundation’s Maui Strong Fund; and Maui Fire and Disaster Relief Donation Page.

AURA and the National Solar Observatory (NSO) are closely monitoring the harrowing, devastating wildfires which have severely impacted our local community in Maui, and stands in solidarity with those impacted by this tragedy—our hearts go out to everyone affected by it.

During this unfolding disaster, AURA’s first priority is the safety and well-being of our staff and their families. At this time, the NSF Daniel K. Inouye Telescope at Haleakalā Observatory is closed for observations; while the NSO offices in Makawao are closed and under evaluation.

In the wake of the wildfires, our community is facing a variety of difficult challenges, and we are committed to helping our neighbors during this difficult time. At this time, for those seeking to donate to organizations providing invaluable assistance as the tragedy unfolds, some possibilities include the following organizations.

The Hawaii Community Foundation: The HCF’s Maui Strong Fund was created to provide community resilience with resources for disaster preparedness, response, and recovery. The fund is currently being used to support communities affected by the wildfires on Maui.
The American Red Cross: The Red Cross is working with local, state, and federal officials on Maui to provide shelters and comfort. There is a specific option for “disaster relief” when one is making a contribution.
The Maui Food Bank: Maui Food Bank’s mission is to help the hungry in Maui County by collecting and distributing food through community partnerships. This group is providing meals for thousands of displaced residents.
