Maritza Arias, Director of the Academy of Astronomy and head of the mathematics department at the Leonardo da Vinci School in the Vicuña commune in Chile, is the winner of the AURA 2020 Padre Picetti Award, an annual initiative by AURA Observatory in Chile. Presented since 2014, the Padre Picetti Award recognizes Chilean educators who have demonstrated a special dedication to the teaching of science and astronomy, thus encouraging new generations of scientists.

In a public virtual ceremony on March 18, Maritza Arias received the award and a telescope that will assist in her astronomy lessons. The award ceremony was broadcast live on the NOIRLab YouTube channel (in Spanish) as part of its Astronomy Day activities in Chile. NOIRLab, an astronomy center managed by AURA, includes Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, the international Gemini Observatory, Kitt Peak National Observatory, the Community Science and Data Center and the operations of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory now under construction.

The event was attended by María José Escobar, Minister Regional Secretary of Sciences of the Macrozona Centro; Father Elson Rojas, Dean of the Conciliar Seminary College; and Dr. Mario Hamuy, Vice President and Director of AURA in Chile.

Maritza Arias was awarded this recognition because of her outstanding and innovative mathematics instruction and her dedication to the outreach and dissemination of astronomy in the Region of Coquimbo for over 15 years. The prize, in addition to a commemorative trophy, includes an 8-inch Dobsonian telescope and an observation night in Cerro Tololo when health conditions will allow.

Dr. Mario Hamuy, Vice President and Director of AURA in Chile, said, “We are very happy that this sixth annual award was given to a teacher from Vicuña, which is the commune where our telescopes are located. This will allow a new generation of children from the surrounding communities to learn about the importance of astronomy for Chile and especially for the Region of Coquimbo, in addition to understanding how important it is to protect its beautiful dark skies”.

María José Escobar, Seremi of Sciences of the Macrozona Centro highlighted, “Teachers interested in science in general, and astronomy in particular, now have in their hands the tools to bring students with diverse interests closer to an exciting topic.”

Maritza Arias from the Leonardo da Vinci School in Vicuña said, “I am very excited that people recognize the work that one does with so much heart. I dream of seeing my students becoming great scientists, which is my greatest prize, and to look for opportunities for them. That’s the reason I teach astronomy, to be able to share my knowledge with my students”.

About the AURA Padre Picetti Award

The AURA Padre Picetti Award, was created in 2014 by the AURA Observatory in Chile. This Award is inspired by father Juan Baptista Picetti from the Seminario Conciliar school. A father and enthusiastic teacher that, along with an infinite patience and dedication, has dedicated his life to awake the enthusiasm and passion for science of young people and children.

The call and application is made every year through AURA Observatory in Chile. The winner is decided by a mixed committee formed by representatives from different scientific and education institutions.

About the 2020 AURA Padre Picetti Award Winner – Teacher Maritza Arias

Maritza Arias studied Pedagogy in Mathematics at the University of Concepción and has worked as a Mathematics teacher for 17 years. She has been dedicated to the outreach and dissemination of astronomy for more than 15 years. Since 2014, she has been the Director of the Academy of Astronomy of the Leonardo da Vinci School, and Head of the Mathematics Department of the same school.

Maritza has led various projects, countless conferences, workshops and training in astronomy during her professional career. Since 2010, she is the founder and general coordinator of “CAACH -Comunidad Astronómica Aficionada Chilena”. In addition, she is the Communications and Coordinator for the Region of Coquimbo of the Astronomy Network for Chilean Teachers, founded under the agreement between the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and the Heidelberg University, Germany.

As of this year, Maritza is also a member of the Committee of the Chilean National Astronomy Education Coordinators (NAEC) for the Office of Astronomy Education OAE of the International Astronomical Union (IAU).

Maritza Arias, Profesora de Vicuña, gana Premio AURA Padre Picetti 2020

La profesora Maritza Arias, Jefa del Departamento de Matemáticas y de la Academia de Astronomía de la Escuela Leonardo da Vinci de la comuna de Vicuña en Chile fue la ganadora del Premio AURA – Padre Picetti 2020, una iniciativa anual impulsada por el Observatorio AURA. Inuagurado en 2014, el Premio AURA-Padre Picetti busca reconocer a profesores líderes que trabajan en Chile con especial dedicación hacia la ciencia y astronomía, incentivando a nuevas generaciones de científicos.

Este reconocimiento fue entregado a Maritza Arias el pasado 18 de marzo en una ceremonia virtual que se transmitió a todo público desde el canal de Youtube de NOIRLab, como parte de las actividades del Dia de la Astronomía en Chile. NOIRLab, un centro astronómico administrado por AURA , que incluye a los telescopios de Cerro Tololo, Gemini, el Observatorio Nacional de Kitt Peak, el Centro Comunitario de Ciencias de Datos y las operaciones del proyecto Vera C. Rubin, ahora bajo construcción.

La ceremonia contó con la presencia de la Seremi de Ciencias de la Macrozona Centro, María José Escobar; el Rector del Colegio Seminario Conciliar, Padre Elson Rojas, y el Vicepresidente y Director de AURA en Chile, Dr. Mario Hamuy.

Maritza ganó este reconocimiento por ser una profesora de matemáticas increíblemente activa e innovadora que hace más de 15 años se dedica a la divulgación y difusión de la astronomía en la Región de Coquimbo. El premio, además de un galvano conmemorativo, considera un telescopio dobsoniano de 20 centímetros y una noche de observación en Cerro Tololo cuando las condiciones sanitarias lo permitan.

El Vicepresidente y Director de AURA en Chile, Dr. Mario Hamuy, señaló que “estamos muy felices que la sexta edición de este premio haya sido obtenido por una profesora de Vicuña, que es la comuna en la cual se encuentran nuestros telescopios. Esto permitirá que una nueva generación de niños de las comunidades aledañas aprenda sobre la importancia de la astronomía para Chile y especialmente para la Región de Coquimbo, y comprenderán lo importante que es proteger sus preciosos cielos oscuros”.

En tanto, la Seremi de Ciencias de la Macrozona Centro, María José Escobar destacó que “los profesores interesados en las ciencias en general, y en la astronomía en particular, tienen en sus manos las herramientas para acercar a los estudiantes con intereses diversos a un tema apasionante”.

Finalmente, respecto a su premiación, la profesora Maritza Arias del Colegio Leonardo da Vinci de Vicuña señaló que “estoy muy emocionada que las personas reconozcan el trabajo que uno hace con tanto corazón, yo sueño con ver a mis alumnas y alumnas convertidos en grandes científicos, ese es mi gran premio, buscar oportunidades para ellos y para eso me capacito en astronomía para poder compartir mis conocimientos con mis estudiantes”.

Sobre el Premio AURA Padre Picetti

El Premio AURA Padre Picetti fue creado en 2014 por el Observatorio de AURA en Chile. Este premio fue inspirado por el sacerdote Juan Baptista Picetti del Colegio Seminario Conciliar, un renombrado religioso y entusiasta maestro que con una paciencia y dedicación infinita ha dedicado su vida a motivar la pasión por la ciencia en jóvenes y niños.

La convocatoria y selección se realiza todos los años a través del Observatorio de AURA en Chile y una comisión mixta integrada por representantes de educación y difusión del Observatorio AURA e instituciones externas.

Sobre la Ganadora Premio AURA Padre Picetti 2020 – Profesora Maritza Arias

Maritza Arias estudió Pedagogía en Matemáticas en la Universidad de Concepción y ha ejercido como profesora de Matemáticas por 17 años. Hace más de 15 años que se dedica a la divulgación y difusión de la astronomía y desde 2014 es Directora de la Academia de Astronomía del Colegio Leonardo da Vinci, además de ejercer como Jefa del Departamento de Matemáticas de ese mismo colegio.

Maritza ha liderado diversos proyectos durante su trayectoria profesional e innumerables congresos, talleres y capacitaciones en astronomía. Desde 2010, es fundadora y coordinadora general de “CAACH -Comunidad Astronómica Aficionada Chilena”. Además, es Encargada de Comunicaciones y Coordinadora por la Región de Coquimbo de la Red de Astronomía para Profesores de Chile, fundada bajo el convenio de excelencia entre la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile y la Universidad de Heidelberg, Alemania.

A contar de este año, Maritza también es Miembro del Comité de los National Astronomy Education Coordinators (NAEC) chileno para la Oficina de Astronomía para la Educación OAE ante la Unión Astronómica Internacional (IAU).
