Return to News ListAURA Solicits Applications and Nominations for the Director, Large Synoptic Survey Telescope
April 19, 2012
The Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) seeks a new Director for the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), with the aim of filling this position by the end of 2012. The LSST is operated by AURA under a cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation.
The 8.4-meter LSST will survey the entire visible sky deeply in multiple colors every week with its three- billion pixel digital camera, probing the mysteries of Dark Matter and Dark Energy, and opening a movie- like window on objects that change or move rapidly: exploding supernovae, potentially hazardous near- Earth asteroids, and distant Kuiper Belt Objects. Led by the Director, the LSST Project Office, presently located in Tucson, Arizona, must carry out a successful construction program for the telescope and site, camera, and data management systems within cost and schedule, and transition to a fully functioning observatory. Additional information on LSST can be found at: http://www.lsst.org/lsst/overview
Candidates for Director should have demonstrated scientific leadership for the astronomical and physics communities and have an established record of achievement. Candidates should also have a demonstrated experience for administration and management (e.g. 5-8 years), combined with recent experience in institutional and international relations.
AURA is inviting Applications for this Position and is also soliciting nominations from the community-at- large. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. All applications received by August 1, 2012 will be given full consideration. All applications will be held in confidence. Applications must include: a curriculum vitae, information on relevant experience and accomplishments, the candidate’s vision for the evolution of the LSST, and the names of three professional references.
