AURA Names Todd Boroson as NOAO Interim Director

April 30, 2007

Today, AURA announced the appointment of Dr. Todd Boroson as Interim Director of the National Optical Astronomy Observatory. Dr. Jeremy Mould, Director since 2001, requested to step down as Director and will remain at NOAO as a member of the scientific staff.

During his tenure as Director, Dr. Mould presided over great changes at NOAO and firmly established it as an effective National Observatory. In 2002, under Mould’s leadership, AURA was successful in winning a major recompetition for the cooperative agreement for the management and operation of NOAO. Mould led NOAO in undertaking the top priority initiatives recommended by the Decadal Survey and achieved major progress in forming a wide variety of public private partnerships.

As Deputy Director during this period, Todd Boroson also played a major role, especially in developing a national system of telescopes. Boroson will lead NOAO over the next several months in developing a proposal for a renewal of the NOAO cooperative agreement that will expand on this system concept and maximize access to public and private telescopes. It will also include major improvements to existing NOAO operated telescopes.

Coincident with this appointment, AURA will undertake the formation of a search committee for a permanent NOAO Director.
