Today, AURA announced that the appointment of Doug Simons as Director of the Gemini Observatory will commence on May 18, 2006. This accelerated appointment, in advance of prior announcements, will allow additional time for Dr. Simons to accomplish critical transition activities. This new appointment date comes as a result of the recommendation of the AURA Oversight Committee for Gemini during its meeting of March 16, 17. In making this appointment, William S. Smith, President of AURA said "we have consulted with the Gemini Board and it is clear that everyone is eager to get Doug in place and settled."
