U.S. Gemini Fellowship Program

AURA is pleased to announce the award under the U.S. Gemini Fellowship Program. The recipient for the 2007-2008 cycle is Dr. José Eduardo Telles, currently a research astronomer at the Observatório Nacional in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The U.S. Gemini Fellowship is carried out in partnership with the NOAO Gemini Science Center under funding from the National Science Foundation and provides research support for up to two years. Research experiences are provided for an annual stipend of up to $36,000 with limited additional support for related items. U.S. Gemini Fellowships provide South American students and educators from Argentina, Brazil, and Chile with opportunities to study, conduct independent research, work, and teach in the United States at universities and similar research institutions of their choice, including CTIO and the NOAO Gemini Science Center. The program's goal is to strengthen science in South American Gemini countries. Participants benefit from their research concentration during their stay abroad and from participating fully in the academic and professional life of the host institution. Host institutions benefit from the presence of bright, highly motivated researchers.

The 2007 award was made after thorough evaluation by the partner countries and an independent review by a specially appointed AURA Selection Committee chaired by Verne Smith of the National Optical Astronomy Observatory, including Nicole Vogt (New Mexico State University) and Charles Woodward (University of Minnesota).

Dr. Telles will take his U.S Gemini Fellowship to the University of Virginia at Charlottesville. His research plan addresses the evolution of starbursts, particularly those in local dwarf galaxies. Telles plans to use Gemini's excellent IFU capabilities, both in the visual and near-infrared spectral regions, in his research.
